5 reasons to watch Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

Here are 5 reasons to watch Jack Reacher: Never Go Back:

Tom Cruise

Famous for his dramatic performances during his early years, Mr. Mission Impossible has reached that stage in his career where he’s sick and tired of bad guys and just wants to smack each and everyone in the face. Just in case readers were in any doubt as to his exasperation, here’s a not-so-friendly reminder:

So, if you’re down for more fight sequences like this one, save a date for this Thursday.

Edward Zwick

Although Academy-Award winner Edward Zwick is far from being a household name, he is considered to be one of the most well-rounded directors working in Hollywood. He has worked primarily in the comedy-drama and epic historical film genres, including critically-acclaimed films such as About Last Night, Glory, Blood Diamond and Love & Other Drugs.

Interestingly, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back will not be Zwick and Cruise’s first collaboration – having worked together previously on 2003’s The Last Samurai. The film garnered strong reviews, earning four Academy Award nominations in the process and grossing a healthy total of $456 million at the box office.

Based on Zwick’s track record and understanding of Cruise’s capabilities, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back certainly has great potential.

Cobie Smulders

Aside from a bit-part role as Maria Hill in Marvel’s The Avengers, Smulders has mainly worked on indie projects such as 2015’s Unexpected and this year’s The Intervention since How I Met Your Mother’s cessation back in 2014.

The prospect of seeing how well the HIMYM alum handles the rigours of a prominent, mainstream and action-centric leading role will undoubtedly excite audiences.

Lee Child approves

Even though Jack Reacher is a long-running novel series by author Lee Child, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back will be based on the 18th novel – Never Go Back. The decision to ignore the series’ chronological order may seem like a weird one, but Child begs to differ.

According to Child, choosing this particular novel as the source was a very smart move on Paramount’s part. “It’s almost a three-hander in terms of audience appeal – you’ve got Reacher, you’ve got the woman sidekick, and then you’ve got this strong teenage girl character”, he said.

Thus, the movie should have a broader appeal as compared to its predecessor, by featuring subplots that add some romantic tension and father/daughter thematic substance.

In the movie-making business, it’s not uncommon to see major film studios run afoul of the authors they work with. Conversely, Child’s positive endorsement is an affirmation of the movie’s quality.

It’ll be much different from the first one

Much like how Cruise’s Mission: Impossible franchise has brought in different directors for each separate instalment, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back may benefit from Edward Zwick’s distinctively different storytelling style.

Seeing as the first instalment by director Christopher McQuarrie is more of a hard-boiled and gritty thriller than an action film, you’ll be treated to a quality viewing experience polished with a whole new take on the Jack Reacher character.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back opens in cinemas on 20 October 2016.
