2016 in film: The floppiest of the flops

2016 has been a record year for movies. And when we say record, we mean the absurd amount of money films made at the box office.

Captain America: Civil War, Finding Dory and Zootopia crossed the prestigious $1 billion mark. Even critical stinkers such as Batman v Superman, the biggest worldwide opening ever for a superhero film, and Warcraft, the highest-grossing video game adaptation, were huge financial successes.

But sadly, for every yin, there’s a yang.

10. Masterminds

Despite its impressive cast, audiences were left scratching their heads with this scattershot comedy.

Gross: $22m from $25m budget

9. Snowden

Well-received by critics, acclaimed filmmaker Oliver Stone’s Edward Snowden biopic couldn’t locate an audience.

Gross: $34.3m from $40m budget

8. Grimsby

An off-tempo Sacha Baron Cohen, affectionally known for his hilarious portrayal of Borat, helms this grim, gross-out comedy.

Gross: $28.7m from $35m budget

7. Whisky Tango Foxtrot

While WTF is far from FUBAR, Emmy-winner Tina Fey and Margot “Harley Quinn” Robbie’s war drama bombed at the box office.

Gross: $24.9m from $35m budget

6. Keeping Up with the Joneses

Comedian Zach Galifianakis makes his second appearance on the list in a disappointing comedy nobody wanted to keep up with.

Gross: $26.9m from $40m budget

5. Rachet & Clank

A stellar voice cast couldn’t save this wretched video game adaptation.

Gross: $11.8m from $20m budget

4. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

There was no pride for this horror action comedy based on the eponymous best-selling novel.

Gross: $16.4m from $28m budget

3. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

Despite good reviews, this music satire was stopped by an uninterested audience.

Gross: $9.5m from $20m budget

2. Free State of Jones

Once seen as a potential awards contender, Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey couldn’t free this slavery drama from the chains of mediocrity.

Gross: $23.2m from $50m budget

1. Max Steel

Superhero movies have been unstoppable at the box office, but this film based on the eponymous Mattel toy line proved that superheroes are by no means impervious when it comes to ticket sales, making it the biggest box office flop of 2016.

Gross: $4.4m from $10m budget

Narrowly missing out are several well-publicised underperformers, including Ben-Hur and Zoolander 2. According to Forbes, “movies underperform for a number of reasons, be it marketing, release date timing, poor reviews or a combination of several factors.”

Luckily for Hollywood, moviegoers are a forgiving bunch.
