Nestia’s Top 5 Blockbusters Of The Year So Far

So much for 2016 to be the watershed year for big box-office movies. Surprisingly, it has been quite the opposite. Amid the furore over the qualities of Batman v Superman, X-Men: Apocalypse, Suicide Squad and Alice Through The Looking Glass, there are a few goodies that not only emerged unscathed, but also lead the race for honorary title of “Best Movie of 2016”.

We know it may be premature to actually decide the best movie of 2016 at the time of writing. Hence, we present to you the top 5 blockbusters of 2016 so far, ranked in ascending order:

5. Star Trek Beyond

Many echoed a certain scepticism when this film was announced. Yet, the third instalment of the Star Trek franchise managed to proof that the post-reboot hot streak is still alive and burning bright. The film delivered a welcome strain of humour that doesn’t deviate from its roots. Audiences were treated to a high-octane, epic sci-fi adventure of grand proportions.

4. The Jungle Book

Featuring a stellar voiceover cast that includes Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson, Disney’s uncanny adaption of the 1967 animated musical version not only managed to successfully honour its source material, but also emoted a subtle surrealism that is rare to find from a continuous stream of Hollywood movies. Today’s technical achievements are succinctly demonstrated in this visual masterpiece.

3. Deadpool

The black sheep of the Marvel family was given the R-rated treatment. That didn’t stop audiences from flooding into the theatres to catch this cult masterpiece. This film neatly balanced bloody violence that doesn’t border on gratuitous and also weaved in many humorous pop culture references into its lean, well-developed story. What made it more impressive was the miniscule budget that it was given.

2. Zootopia

Although many can contest that Finding Dory should be in this list, Zootopia deserves it more, and rightfully so. This emphatic, animated showpiece mixes fun and mischief in ways that will leave you shedding tears of both joy and sadness. Filled with overarching themes of racism and xenophobia, Zootopia is arguably the most vibrant and thought-provocative Disney feature so far.

1. Captain America: Civil War

DC executives listen up: this is how you do a comic book sequel. This year’s best popcorn flick to date thrilled audiences with the introduction of beloved characters such as Spiderman and Black Panther into the MCU. Despite the big scope and an irrefutable difficulty of juggling a huge cast, the movie never feels overstuffed or ponderous.
