Del Toro drops out of ‘Predator’ prequel

The Predator requel helmed by director Shane Black (Iron Man 3) has just hit a major setback.

The search for a lead was thought to be done when Benicio Del Toro (Sicario) was revealed to be in talks to star. Now, it has been reported that Del Toro has fallen out of negotiations, with Boyd Holbrook (Narcos) set to replace him.

Del Toro’s performance in Sicario has proved to audiences that he is an actor that can seriously carry a movie. His exit definitely throws a spanner in the works.

On the other hand, Holbrook has yet to show that he has what it takes to carry a film. However, we’ll get a clearer picture once we see him next year as villain Donald Pierce in Logan, the upcoming Wolverine movie.

We’ll hold off our reservations until then.

There are a number of stories going around about the production of Jurassic World 2. It is rumoured to be scarier, one of the most expensive films ever made and will serve as the second part of a trilogy.

It now seems that some hints in regards to the movie’s plot has been revealed too. During a recent interview, director J.A. Bayona (A Monster Calls) shared some insights about the issues that the upcoming sequel will be tackling.

“The dinosaurs will be a parable of the treatment animals receive today: the abuse, medical experimentation, pets, having wild animals in zoos like prisons, the use the military has made of them, animals as weapons”, he said.

Aside from being a visual spectacle, 2015’s Jurassic World was also a fitting commentary on capitalism. Based on Bayona’s statement, it certainly seems like the sequel will tackle concepts more complex than the first one.

Jurassic World 2 is set to open on 22 June 2018.

A web of spinoffs

The proverbial applause was heard all over the world when Marvel finally struck a deal with Sony to bring Spider-Man back to his home in the MCU. Despite losing their exclusivity to the beloved web slinger, Sony still has rights to the property.

That means that they are free to make other movies in the Spider-Man universe. Oh, the horror!

There have been rumours circulating that Sony is toying with the idea of Spider-Man spinoff movies, including Venom, Sinister Six and Silver Sable, for quite some time now. However, it seems like more concrete details will emerge very soon.

According to Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman, audiences can expect “real news as opposed to speculative news before too long.”

While plans remain afoot, the idea of even more Spider-Man-related movies not connected to the MCU will make things a little muddier, but interesting nonetheless. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to know more.
