Open concept wardrobe: A stylish and affordable way to store your clothes

Most of us in Singapore do not have the luxury of owning a walk-in wardrobe, but that doesn’t mean that the only option left to us will be to stuff all our clothes into unfashionable boxes and traditional wardrobes with doors. The right use of open concept wardrobes (yes, I mean wardrobes without doors like clothes racks for example) can achieve an extremely stylish look, especially when paired with a minimalist or industrial bedroom design.

Not convinced? Take a look at these pictures for inspiration!

Don’t they look absolutely striking against the wall? It certainly does not come as intuitive to most people to leave their clothes out in the open, but in a place like Singapore where living spaces are limited, an open concept wardrobe could be your creative solution to storing excess clothes.

And if you are the type who periodically cleans out your closet, then the open concept wardrobe could easily serve as the main way for you to store your clothes and items.

If you are eager to create a similar look in your bedroom, look no further than IKEA for affordable, beautiful options. Here are our top five choices from IKEA:

1. PAX Wardrobe, white stained oak effect ($380)

Wooden with clean lines, this wardrobe is particularly suited for bedrooms decorated in a Scandinavian theme.

2. MULIG Clothes rack ($19.90)

We’re pretty sure that this is the exact same rack in some of the pictures above. And even if it’s not, it’s incredibly similar to it. So if you are going for a similar look, this is your rack.

3. TURBO clothes rack ($69)

For people who wear predominantly dark-coloured clothes (some guys for example), your dark clothes will look better on a black rack.

4. ALGOT Wall upright/shelf/triple hook ($393)

This multi-functional rack gives a Muji-esque feel, and is particularly suited for homes decorated in the Japanese modern style.

5. ENUDDEN Hat and coat stand ($39.90)

Although this is a stand for hats and coats, you can hang colourful shirts on it to give your room a creative touch.

Nestia’s Tips

  • Make sure that you do not overhang the clothes on the rack as it will spoil the look.
  • Sort clothes according to their colours or clothing types to create a clean look. You can also sort your clothes according to their colours first, and then add bursts of colours by slotting in a few bright-coloured clothes.
  • The whole point of an open concept wardrobe is to make your clothes look as though they belong to a chic and trendy up-market apparel store, so make sure your room remains as clutter-free as possible!
