Singaporeans buy the weirdest 4D numbers

The Olympic record-breaking swim time of 50’39 by Joseph Schooling at the Rio Olympics 2016 scored Singapore’s very first gold medal. This was a legendary moment for Singapore, where a Singaporean swimmer beat swimming legends, American Micheal Phelps, South Africa’s Chad le Clos and Hungary’s Laszlo Cesh for the gold, while the three greats tied for Silver.

Singaporeans were so thrilled and proud of our homegrown talent and celebrated this win by getting a 4D ticket with the obvious 4-digit timing. Within an hour of his winning the race, the number 5039 was sold out at all 4D outlets in Singapore.

The iBet for this number (3509) won a starter prize on 3 September. Due to a large number of people vying for the same lottery number during its peak and popular season, the number is likely to be sold out if you didn't manage to place your bet quick enough. Should that be the case, you could try buying it a few months after the event or on an anniversary to try your luck again.

In line with the public's response towards drawing lottery inspirations from a significant event that had taken place on a national level, let us have a look at another similar scenario.

In 2015, Mr Lee Kuan Yew passed on at 3.18am on 23 March at Singapore General Hospital. It was a solemn day for Singapore and mourning began nationwide.

However, there were people who took to buying 4D to mark the significant event on that day. By 8am, the timing of his passing, 0318 was already sold out at many outlets, while the date and other numbers were sold out quickly in the afternoon. These numbers include the date of his passing (2303), to his date of birth (1609) and car plate numbers and the plate number of Mr Lee’s hearse (8898).
