Traveling around in Singapore

There are several different ways to get around in Singapore. Firstly, the public transport where it undergoes constant expansion and is one of the best in Asia.

To get around via public buses or trains (known as the MRT / LRT in Singapore) you need to buy either an electronic ticket for one time use, or an EZ-Link card to which you can add value that you spend as you travel. You can purchase this card at every MRT station.

Buses are also a significant part of the public transportation service in Singapore. There are more than 4000 buses operating in Singapore today, which play an important role in serving the HDB flats, condominiums and landed houses that are situated further from the MRTs. For both trains and buses, it is easy to find routes and maps at every stop and station so don’t worry about navigating your way around.

It is important to note that Singapore being a fine city ^_^, you will need to behave yourself when commuting on the trains or buses. The things you can be fined for ranges from the simple eating and drinking to “entering or remaining in train when it is full”. Yes, we're not joking. (View the list of fines below which was published in the local newspaper!)

There are also large fleets of taxis roaming around – always equipped with their taximeters – all ready to take you to any destination. In contrast to many other Asian countries, taking a taxi in Singapore does not involve long price negotiations with the taxi drivers. You simply get in and tell them the address of your intended destination, and their taximeters will do the math.

Lastly, buying a car can be quite expensive. In Singapore, you required to get a permit for owning a car. This figure can as much as SGD$50,000 and upwards! This is in addition to the price you would pay for a car. There are, however, other options such as leasing a car, which can be a cheaper and easier alternative if you are not staying in Singapore for too long.
