Things you should do when you buy the lottery

Buying the lottery with the hopes of winning the game is based on luck and chance, more than it is a knowledge game. Nonetheless, it doesn’t mean that there is no way of upping your odds of winning.

Though luck and chance are not guaranteed nor within our control, there are some essential tips we can adhere to, in maximising our bets.

1. Select the most suitable game to play

Every state has a selection of lottery games, each with different game rules and methods of play. Here in Singapore, we have the 4D, TOTO, the monthly Big Sweep, as well as a football betting game called SCORE.

Draw dates for 4D take place three times a week, hence giving you more opportunities to place the bets of your respective four-digit permutations, while the TOTO draw is held twice a week. The latter banks your luck on a group of 6 individual numbers.

There is no right approach, but do select the right game that maximises your chances of winning!

2. Form lottery pools with groups of friends

The most straightforward way of upping your chances of winning is to buy more lottery tickets and place multiple bets. However, that will amount up to a large cost.

By forming lottery pools with the people around you with the same desire of upping your chances of winning large prizes, you’ll get the opportunity of improving your odds without having to spend more money.

Do gather your family members, close friends, neighbours and co-workers to form your lottery pools. Who knows, one of you may just hit the jackpot soon!

3. Have second-chance games to multiply winning chances

Ok, so your numbers didn’t come up for the draw… Do you toss away your lottery ticket? No way!

On 8 June 2010 in the United States, About.com Sweepstakes Forum member KentuckyBell reported a Big Lottery Win. But she didn't win because of the numbers she played when she bought the ticket, but because she entered the second-chance game in the Kentucky Lottery -- and her entry was picked as the winner. She took home $120,610.70 after taxes.

Just because you didn’t win the first time, do try placing your bet for the same number/group of numbers for the subsequent draw.

4. Beware of lottery scams

A sad truth lies in that scammers do exist, and they take advantage of people’s dream of winning the lottery. Here are a few tips to protect yourselves from lottery scams:

• Only place your bets with authorised lottery retailers, i.e. licensed Singapore Pools outlets

• Be responsible in checking and double-checking your tickets with the draw results

• Never pay money upfront to receive a lottery winning prize

With the upcoming legalisation of online betting, the convenience of placing bets online just means more responsibility on us in ensuring that our online betting accounts are safeguarded.

Many platforms are available in accessing the accurate results of lottery draws, such as the official Singapore Pools website which gives you the results 30 minutes after the draw.

If you wish to catch the draw 'live', Nestia is a good choice.
